Ronald "steve" pitts | remediation specialist

Professional Experience

Mr. Pitts has over 25 years of experience in environmental assessment and remediation. He has been involved in a variety of projects in the environmental industry and has a keen understanding of remediation system operations and maintenance (O&M). Mr. Pitts’ experience includes soil and groundwater assessment, remediation system installation and startup, remediation system O&M, construction oversight, emergency response (ER), source removals, waste handling and disposal, maintenance of traffic (MOT), oversight of underground and above ground storage tank removals, client communication and personnel management.  Mr. Pitts has managed, operated, and maintained over 500 remediation systems.
Representative Project Experience

USDA ARS Sugarcane Field Station, Canal Point, Florida: Mr. Pitts was the field supervisor for this aboveground storage tank (AST) removal and assessment. Steve’s expertise allowed for the expedited removal of the two 2,000-gallon ASTs along with the containment wall and stairs. He installed five soil borings and supervised the installation of one temporary monitor well to assess petroleum impacts in the vicinity of the ASTs. Prior to the intrusive field activities, Mr. Pitts conducted a site walk with key onsite staff to determine utility and other underground hazards. Electro-magnetic (EM) and Real-Time Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Locating equipment was employed to locate and mark all facilities in the work area. Mr. Pitts collected soil and groundwater samples pursuant to regulatory guidelines. Based on the field screening and laboratory analysis, no further assessment was requested in a formal regulatory Tank Closure Report submittal completed by the Engineer-of-Record, Liza Grudin, PE, ME. The report was approved with no comments from the local regulatory agency.

Lockheed Martin, Orlando, Orange County: From 2006 to 2015, Mr. Pitts conducted weekly O&M activities, including all electrical and mechanical repairs, for this pump and treat system designed to address chlorinated solvent impacts. The remediation system consisted of two ¼-mile long horizontal wells installed to a depth of 300 feet below ground surface (ft bgs) and multiple vertical remediation wells. Four satellite systems merged into one main system with a scroll compressor, double diaphragm pumps on each well, fiber optic telemetry, and an air stripping tower.

FDOT, State Road (SR) 710, Riviera Beach, Palm Beach County: The project scope included the design and implementation of the above ground installation of a remediation mechanical system consisting of an AS/SVE system for drainage and roadway improvement work. Mr. Pitts evaluated the remediation system and electrical components for use on this FDOT project.

FTE Service Plaza Upgrades: Mr. Pitts was involved at each of the Turnpike Plaza start-ups for the original and upgraded systems and for troubleshooting and repair of electrical and mechanical issues. Remediation systems consisted of multiple AS/SVE trailers with up to 191 AS and 120 SVE remediation points per site. During system operation and maintenance, Mr. Pitts key O&M activities kept runtime over 90% allowing for plaza upgrade schedules to remain in place. Mr. Pitts managed the onsite dewatering systems during tank removal and repair activities and conducted soil assessment.

Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County: Mr. Pitts worked closely with the PE and project manager to provide recommendations for optimum system performance and an increased amount of LPH recovery and decrease of water intake at the Broward County owned Common Areas of Port Everglades. Mr. Pitts was responsible for the initial installation, design and equipment modifications allowing for continued free product recovery in advance of port construction activities.
